One of the crucial developments after the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 was the emergence of forest certification in the global forest policy dialogues intended to address declining forest areas and deforestation, as well as to determine immediate actions needed to manage forests sustainably. Forest certification provides the opportunity to ensure that forest products originate from sustainably managed forests, validated through a process which results in a written certificate being issued by an independent third party attesting to the location and management procedures of a forest that is producing timber. It is a voluntary market-based mechanism to ensure that timber is harvested through sustainable forest management practices and the manufacturing of certified timber products throughout the entire timber supply chain. This new and innovative approach has attracted many scholars and researchers to explore the distinctive governance mechanism. Currently, forest certification is a global phenomenon and has rapidly gained momentum, whereby countries have undertaken concerted actions to implement forest certification.

This book provides a brief overview of the status of global forest resources, sustainable forest management definitions and the development of criteria and indicators as a mechanism to measure the progress of sustainable forest management at the global and national levels. These efforts provided the basis for the development of standards for forest management certification. The current status and progress of forest certification at the global level were also looked at. A comprehensive regional review was conducted on the various experiences and initiatives undertaken by international organizations and agencies, as well as respective countries, in the implementation and impact of forest certification. The lessons learned provided opportunities to explore and assess gaps and challenges in the process of the implementation of forest certification. The future challenges and options moving forward to boost the potential of forest certification are highlighted in this book.
