Nanofiltration (NF) membrane is known as a green nano-technology with a promising mechanism for effective salt recovery such as succinic acid in the biorefinery industry. The flexibility of tailoring membrane properties has made it of high desirability to be further explored. In this book, a newly fabricated and modified polyimide (PI) membrane is introduced as an alternative to the commercial NF membranes for concentrated succinic acid recovery from the fermentation broth, which has yet to be reported in the field of organic acid separation. This book examines the effect of neat Pl membrane production and operating process framework on succinate rejection and selectivity performances, the membrane properties and performance with respect to a few commercial membranes, and the effect of adding graphene oxide (GO) and ethylenediamine (EDA), via blending and crosslinking respectively, on the membrane performance. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is also used to evaluate the effect of fabrication and process variables on the performance of the cross-linked membrane. Model solutions consisting of succinate, formate, and acetate and Oil Palm Frond (OPF)-juice-based fermentation broth are used throughout the work. The modified-PI NF membrane has shown great potential for the recovery of bio-based succinate. The modification of the Pi membrane with GO and EDA allows the membrane to be utilized in concentrated solution without compromising the membrane rejection and selectivity performance.
